history

In 2006 the company announced sales of $ 2.67 billion. In total, the company operated around 1.7 million telephone connections.

From the postal company to the telecommunications industry

The acronym IAM from Maroc Telecom comes from the Arabic name Ittisalat al-Maghrib. The name "Maroc Telecom" was later adopted abroad for better recognition.

The origins of Moroccan telecommunications date back to 1891 when Sultan Hassan I established the first Moroccan postal service.

telecommunications

In 1967 the first submarine pipeline was placed in Morocco between Tetouan , Morocco and Perpignan , France. A telex system was installed and automated in 1971 just before a digital center was built in Fez .

With the advance of telecommunications around the world, Morocco decided to set up a new authority called the Office National des Postes et Télécommunications (ONPT). ONPT was responsible for introducing analog mobile telephony in 1987.

Internet

The Internet was introduced in Morocco in 1995 by the ONPT. Maroc Telecom currently offers Internet connections with up to 200 Mbits / s.

Foundation of the IAM

After the "Telecommunications Decree" was passed, Maroc Telecom (IAM) was founded in 1998.

privatization

On February 20, 2001, the Moroccan government sold 35% of the shares in IAM to the French group Vivendi. The shares were sold for 23 billion dirhams . On January 4, 2005, Vivendi bought an additional 16% for 12.4 billion dirhams which resulted in them owning the majority of the shares. In October Vivendi received an additional 2% in exchange for 0.6% of Vivendi shares.

owner

In July 2013 Vivendi announced that it would sell its 53% shares in Etisalat for US $ 4.2 billion.

Business areas

IAM has three main businesses.

Fixed connections

IAM operates around 1.6 million fixed lines.

Mobile phones

Mobile phone services are provided through a GSM network. The IAM had around 33 million customers in 2012. 97% of the Moroccan population is covered by the IAM network. There are also around 12.5 million customers in Mali, Gabon, Burkina Faso and Mauritania. IAM is one of the most profitable telephone providers in all of Africa with a turnover of around 2.2 billion euros (2012).

Maroc Telecom introduced a 4G offer in 2015, but this was not well received as the Internet connections were often poor and 4G quality was not good.

Customer service

Customer service can only be reached by phone and not by form, as is the case with other telecommunications companies.

Projects and investments

On June 1, 2006, IAM launched an IPTV package together with Huawei Technology via an ADSL connection. This offering was the first of its kind in Africa and the Middle East .

In July 2006, Maroc Telecom signed a contract with the French company Alcatel to lay an underwater pipeline between Morocco and France. The goal of IAM is to improve their services. The project cost 26 million euros.

In December 2006, Maroc Telecom bought 51% of ONATEL from Burkina Faso .
