Marpesia furcula is a butterfly ( butterflies ) from the family of noble moths (Nymphalidae) that occursin Central and South America.

There is a noticeable sexual dimorphism between the sexes . The upper sides of the wings in the males have a black-brown basic color. The basal region is colored orange-yellow. In some butterflies, the disk region is partially covered by a blue-violet iridescent shimmer. The females have a brownish base color, narrow dark stripes in the basal region and show no shimmer. A few small white spots stand out near the apex . The undersides of the wings, which are almost without drawings, are dark brown in the males and light brown in the females. The hind wings are provided with a pair of long tails in both sexes.
Similar species
The females of Marpesia tutelina differ by the wider stripes in the basal region.
Occurrence and habitat
The distribution area of Marpesia furcula with the subspecies Marpesia furcula oechalia and Marpesia furcula violetta extends from Nicaragua , Panama and Brazil to Peru , Ecuador , Bolivia and Argentina . The species colonizes evergreen rainforests at altitudes between sea level and 1,400 meters.
Way of life
The butterflies sometimes have mass phenomena and spectacular migrations. In August 2012, for example, in Peru the flyby of around 10,000 butterflies of different species was roughly determined within four hours, of which around half were Marpesia furcula . Further details on the species' way of life have yet to be explored.
