Marpesia zerynthia ( synonym : Marpesia coresia ) is a butterfly ( butterflies )found in Central and South Americafromthe noble butterfly family (Nymphalidae).

The wingspan of the moth is 70 to 81 millimeters. There is no sexual dimorphism , but the females are usually larger than the males. In both sexes, the base color of the top of all wings is velvety dark brown. Only the edge and, in a weaker form, the front edge and the basal region are colored red-brown. The undersides of the wings show about half inside a white and outside a black-brown color. In English usage which is kind of a Waiter called (waiter). The hind wings are provided with a short and a long pair of pointed tails.

Pre-imaginal stages

The eggs are yellowish to reddish in color, have the shape of a truncated cone and are provided with eleven longitudinal ribs and less pronounced horizontal ribs. Shortly before the caterpillars hatch, they take on a blackish color.

Freshly hatched caterpillars are initially colored glassy light green and have a shiny black head. Between the second and fourth instar, the caterpillars grow slightly curved horns on the head and they take on a predominantly light brown color with a dark brown side stripe. On the back about a third of the length of the body and on the anal segment there are two outgrowths (scoli), which protrude conspicuously in the fifth caterpillar stage.

The doll is designed as a falling doll, has a light green color and an angular shape. The back has a few short spines on each segment, and a very long spine protrudes in the middle. The laterally protruding wing sheaths have sharp black tips. The head shows a pair of short, pointed horns. Two small black round spots stand out behind the head.

Occurrence and habitat

Marpesia zerynthia occurs in Central America and Brazil . Immigrants have also been reported from southern Texas . In Peru and Colombia is a subspecies Marpesia Zerynthia dentigera home. The species colonizes both tropical forest areas and open terrain. The altitude distribution is between sea level and 2400 meters.

Way of life

The moths fly in Mexico in May to November, in Texas from July to October suck nectar on the flowers of.
