Award and subordinate titles

The title was created for Sir Alexander Mountbatten on November 7, 1917 . Along with the dignity of marquess he was awarded the subordinate titles Earl of Berkhamsted and Viscount Launceston , of Launceston in the County of Cornwall . He was a cousin of King George V and on July 14, 1917, as a result of the anti-German mood during the First World War , he had followed his request, had renounced all his German titles and addresses as Highness and Prince von Battenberg and had his family name von Battenberg zu Mountbatten changed.

Since the Marquess left no male descendants, the titles expired on his death on February 23, 1960.
