Viscount Launceston
Viscount Launceston was a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once each in the Peerage of Great Britain and the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
Awards
The title was first created on July 26, 1726 in the Peerage of Great Britain for Friedrich Ludwig von Hannover , the son and heir of the future King George II . The title was bestowed on him as a subsidiary title along with the titles of Duke of Edinburgh , Marquess of the Isle of Ely , Earl of Eltham and Baron Snowdon . When his father became king in 1727, he also received the title of Prince of Wales . His son George inherited his title when he died in 1751. When he was named George III in 1760. Became king, the titles became extinct by merging with the crown.
In the second award on November 7, 1917, the title Viscount Launceston , of Launceston in the County of Cornwall , was newly created in the Peerage of the United Kingdom for Sir Alexander Mountbatten . The title was awarded to him as a minor title along with the titles of Marquess of Carisbrooke and Earl of Berkhamsted . He was a cousin of King George V and on July 14, 1917, as a result of the anti-German mood during the First World War , he had followed his request, had renounced all his German titles and addresses as Highness and Prince von Battenberg and had his family name von Battenberg zu Mountbatten changed. Since the Marquess left no male descendants, the titles expired on his death on February 23, 1960.
