Marquess of Milford Haven is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The Marquess's family residence was initially Lynden Manor in Holyport , Berkshire , and later Moyns Park in Birdbrook , Essex .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on July 17, 1917 for the former First Sea Lord Prince Ludwig Alexander von Battenberg . Due to the anti-German mood in the First World War , the latter had changed his family name to Mountbatten three days earlier and renounced his German nobility title.

Simultaneously with the Marques title he was awarded the subordinate titles Earl of Medina and Viscount Alderney . These also belong to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and are named after the River Medina on the Isle of Wight and the Channel Island of Alderney . The eldest son of the respective marquess carries the title of courtesy Earl of Medina as his title heir .
