Bas Lansdorp, founder of Mars One

Mars One was a " media hype " from a private foundation under Dutch law , which originally had set itself the goal of landing people on Mars in 2023 and building a permanently habitable settlement there. According to the Dutch entrepreneur Bas Lansdorp, the project was to be marketed and financed as "the largest media event in world history " as part of a reality TV show (or Mission TV ).

The mission concept was based on the assumption that the participating astronauts would not return to Earth and thus spend the rest of their lives on Mars. Mars One had received several thousand applications and wanted to recruit a group of up to 40 astronauts from the 100 applicants remaining in the 2015 preselection, which should form the basis of a Mars colonization . The schedule has been and is being postponed again and again by Bas Lansdorp, most recently in December 2016 for an indefinite period.

financing

According to Lansdorp's estimate, it would take six billion US dollars to make the first manned landing. In February 2015, however, the television company Endemol withdrew from the project. The business activities were then apparently limited to the sale of fan articles. Applicants for the project spoke of fraud and “rip-off”: The selection process was not serious, the final selection of the four-person teams was still pending, the candidates had understood that Mars One had almost no more funds.

In the spring of 2017, the company's shares fell sharply, whereupon trading was suspended until further notice with effect from March 27, 2017 on the grounds that "proper stock exchange trading is currently not guaranteed" . In addition, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange pointed out that with effect from July 5, 2017, tradability on Xetra was also discontinued. In a decision dated October 23, 2017, BaFin set fines against Mars One Ventures AG in the amount of 230,000 euros. This measure had already been threatened with a decision dated August 7, 2017, with which Mars One Ventures AG was - unsuccessfully - requested to fulfill its financial reporting obligations. On March 1, 2018, fines of 172,500 euros were threatened again and set on May 24, 2018. On June 26, 2018, the company filed an objection to the notice of penalty payment.

By decision of January 15, 2019, the Civil Court of Basel-Stadt opened the Swiss company for bankruptcy with effect from January 15, 2019, 3:37 p.m., which means that it has been dissolved.

Scientific assessment of the project

According to experts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , if the funds were in place, there would be several serious problems preventing the mission from going well. So far, there is no reliable information whatsoever that Bas Lansdorp's planned Mars One mission is feasible at all, not even in the period he has extended over and over again. The whole project could be realized in Hollywood rather than Cape Canaveral , according to the Dutch press on May 3, 2017.

Reactions

The former science astronaut Ulrich Walter already judged Mars One negatively on August 17, 2012 - quote: "You only have to imagine that people are dying up there in front of the camera, and we watch very comfortably." - In the same newspaper article, the Catholic said Theologian Dieter Hattrup , he would have no moral objections provided that there was a realistic chance of survival - quote: "Otherwise Columbus would never have sailed across the Atlantic and the American settlers never moved west."
