The Marshall Defense of the Queen's Gambit is a chess opening . Your ECO code is D06.

It is named after the American chess master Frank Marshall and starts with the moves:

1. d2-d4 d7-d5
2. c2-c4 Ng8-f6

Marshall used this style of play in the 1925 Baden-Baden tournament and lost a well-known game there against Alexander Alekhine . White should be 3. c4xd5! (on 3rd Sb1-c3 may Black means 3. ... e7-e6 in the Orthodox defense means 3. ... c7-c6 in the Slavic defense or by means of 3 ... g6 g7 in the Grünfeld Defense pass. In 3 ... Bc8 – f5? Follows 4. Qd1 – b3 d5xc4 5. Qb3xb7 Nb8 – d7 6. Qb7 – c6) reply. The structure of this opening is reminiscent of the Queen's Gambit Accepted:

  • 3.… Qd8xd5 was recommended by Tarrasch because of the similarity to the Scandinavian Defense after 4. Nb1 – c3 Qd5 – a5. In the process 5. Bc1 – d2 Qa5 – b6 6. Ng1 – f3 Qb6xb2 ?? 7. Ra1 – b1 Qb2 – a3 8. Nc3 – b5 the pawn b2 proves to be poisoned .
  • 3.… Nf6xd5 4. e2 – e4 (the calm 4. Ng1 – f3 , which is regarded as the best, can be transferred to the Chigorin defense by Black with 4.… Nb8 – c6 . The prevention of e2 – e4 after 4. Nf3 Bf5 leads to a black concession after 5. Qb3. 4. g2 – g3 is also quite possible) 4.… Nd5 – f6 (4.… Nd5 – b6 is also possible with the idea of following the further moves g7 – g6 and Bf8 –G7 in the Grünfeld-Indian defense ) 5. Bf1 – d3 e7 – e5 . This pawn sacrifice , which also happens on 5. Nb1 – c3, was Marshall's idea. 5. Nb1 – c3 does not, however, interrupt the queen effect on d4, so that 6. Ng1 – f3 works well on e7 – e5 in this case. After 6. d4xe5 Nf6 – g4 , 7. f2 – f4 is not good because of 7.… Bf8 – c5, and 7. Ng1 – f3 Nb8 – c6 8. Bc1 – g5 (7. Bc1 – f4 is followed by 7.… Nc6– b4 with advantage for Black) Bf8 – e7 9. Bg5xe7 Qd8xe7 10. Nb1 – c3 Nc6xe5 11. Nf3xe5 Ng4xe5 leads to an even position. 5. e4 – e5 Nf6 – d5 6. Bf1 – c4 leads to the Queen's Gambit accepted .

Overall, however, the Marshall Defense is not considered to be fully adequate and is very rare in today's master practice.
