from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Martín Cortés (* 1523 (?) In Coyoacán ; † 1595 in Madrid ) was the first son of the Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortés and his lover Malinche . He is considered one of the first mestizos to be of historical importance. To distinguish it from its half-brother of the same name, it is often referred to in Spanish-speaking countries by the nickname "El Mestizo".

biography

Hernán Cortés got to know Malinche during the conquest of Mexico , who initially served him as a translator. They had a love affair, from which a son sprang up in 1523 (according to some sources 1522 or even 1524). The child was separated from his mother at an early age and grew up in Cuba under the supervision of relatives of the father . In 1529 he and two other half-siblings, Catalina (* 1514) and Luis (* 1525), were legitimized by a papal bull . In 1540 Cortés returned to Spain with his illegitimate son, where Martín Cortés served as a page under Charles V and his successor Philip II . In 1563 he returned to the viceroyalty of New Spain .

More name bearers
