Martell is one of the oldest cognac manufacturers. The company was founded in 1715 by Jean Martell (1694–1753) and is owned by the Pernod-Ricard group as part of Martell Mumm Perrier-Jouët .

history

The young trader Jean Martell, who originally came from Jersey , began his activity as a cognac trader on the banks of the Charente in 1715 and thus founded one of the first cognac houses. After his death in 1753, his widow, then his two sons and finally his grandchildren continued the trade and expanded the company's export business. In 1814 Martell became the most popular brand of cognac in England.

Martell's first VSOP cognac appeared in 1831 and the company accelerated its international expansion. Martell exported to Japan and other Asian markets such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Korea.

The Martell Cordon Bleu appeared for the first time in 1912 .

In 1936 Martell was served aboard the RMS Queen Mary and in 1977 also on the Concorde .

In 1987 the Seagram group took over the French company for USD 1.2 billion  .

Since taking over some spirits from the Seagram Group in 2001, Martell has belonged to the French spirits group Pernod Ricard.

At the beginning of the 21st century Martell created some new cognacs: Martell XO in 2005, and Martell Création Grand Extra in 2007, in a bottle designed by artist and glass designer Serge Mansau . In 2009 Martell launched the cognac L'Or de Jean Martell . In 2011 Martell expanded its range to include the Martell Chanteloup Perspective cognac , a tribute to the skill of the cellar master and the Chanteloup region .

In 2006 Martell joined the Comité Colbert , an association that promotes awareness of French luxury products on an international level.

In 2010 Martell renewed the partnership it had started in 2007 with the Palace of Versailles by providing a financial contribution to the renovation of the Queen's anteroom.

In 2012, the Martell Cordon Bleu , which was first presented in 1912 by Edouard Martell in the Hôtel de Paris in Monaco , celebrated its 100th birthday at the same location.

useful information

Les borderies

The terroir in the Les Borderies region produces a cru which, due to its rarity and the quality of the eau de vie produced from it, is considered the best cognac in the region. Jean Martell was already interested in the Les Borderies region when he founded his cognac company. The grape variety Ugni Blanc gives the cognac an aromatic bouquet, which is characterized by a fruity taste with a sweet, spicy note.

distillation

Martell has developed its own distillation process using the traditional Charentais copper still. The techniques used in the distillery go back to the time of Jean Martell.

maturation

For the final maturation, Martell chose fine-grain oak barrels. At the end of the aging process, samples are taken from the eau de vie under the strict control of the cellar master and prepared for blending the cognac.
