Martha Quadrille

The Martha Quadrille is a quadrille by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 46). It was probably first performed in January 1848.

Remarks

The Quadrille is based on the opera Martha by Friedrich von Flotow . The success of this opera inspired many musicians in Vienna to further process themes from the stage work. The best known version, also a Martha quadrille , was written by Johann Strauss (father) (op. 215). When the opera premiered in Vienna, the younger Johann Strauss was on a trip to the Balkans. His publisher sent him a piano reduction of the opera, which enabled him to write a quadrille about it. Except for one subject, he used different motifs than his father. When exactly and where the work was performed for the first time is not known. Subsequently, the work was rarely played, if at all, and was forgotten. This was also due to the large number of such works by the composer, which displaced each other from the concert programs. In the meantime the original orchestral version was also lost. For the piano recording mentioned below, Professor Ludwig Babinski had to create a new arrangement based on the piano reduction. In contrast to the son's failure with the Martha Quadrille , his father was significantly more successful with his work of the same name, which lasted longer and was played more often.

The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 4 minutes and 30 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
