Martha Thorne (born March 6, 1953 in the United States ) is an American architect , curator , editor and author . She is the managing director of the Pritzker Architecture Prize and dean of the private IE University in Madrid .

Life and professional career

Thorne earned a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Development from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a Master of Arts in Urban Planning from the University of Pennsylvania . She then continued her education at the London School of Economics . She is particularly interested in international contemporary architecture, cities in development and the changes in the role of the architect. She was on the Board of Trustees of the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts for six years and served on the Advisory Committee of the International Archive of Women in Architecture (IAWA) for three years .

From 1996 to 2005 Thorne was co-curator of architecture at the Art Institute of Chicago . In this role, she not only designed numerous exhibitions, but was also responsible for developing the Institute's publications and participating in a groundbreaking study on collecting, archiving and exhibiting digitally created design materials.

In August 2005 she was appointed Executive Director of the renowned Pritzker Architecture Prize. Her appointment was made by the Hyatt Foundation, which funds the Pritzker Prize. In her role as managing director, she works closely with the jury, but does not vote herself.

Thorne was initially Associate Dean for External Relations at the IE School of Architecture and Design at the private IE University in Madrid and was appointed Dean in 2015.

Thorne is also known in the professional world as an author, co-author and editor of numerous non-fiction books and specialist articles on architectural topics. Her works have been published in the USA, Great Britain, Spain and Germany and can be found in numerous libraries around the world.

Thorne is currently also a member of the international jury for the architecture prize ArcVision: Women and Architecture , an award for outstanding achievements by women architects.
