biography

Youth and European Cup

Jelena Jakowischina comes from Kamchatka and lives - possibly from birth - with impaired hearing . In order to be able to ski at a high level, she depends on hearing aids . In addition to her career in top-class sport, she completed a degree at the state university for physical education, sport, youth and tourism.

Jakowischina started initially only in the general class despite her hearing impairment. In February 2009 she started at the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival in Szczyrk , where she finished 35th in slalom. At the end of the season she took part in a junior world championship in Garmisch-Partenkirchen for the first time and was classified in all five disciplines. The best result she achieved was eighth in the super combination . In four other JWM participations ( Mont Blanc 2010 , Crans-Montana 2011 , Roccaraso 2012 , Québec 2013 ) a sixth place in the super combined (2012) was her best result. Jakowischina has been competing in the European Cup since February 2011, where she has been among the top 20 eight times so far.

World Cup and major events

After a few starts in the Nor-Am Cup and Australian New Zealand Cup , she made her World Cup debut on January 29, 2012 in the Super Combined in St. Moritz . Since then she has had a few more starts in her parade disciplines Downhill and Super-G, but has not been able to score any points. In February 2013 she took part in the World Championships in Schladming and finished 21st and 30th in super combined and downhill. She then represented her country in Sochi for the first time at the Winter Olympics and achieved her best result at a major event with 14th place in the super combined. So far she has been named Russian champion three times. In 2011 she won the giant slalom, in 2014 she was successful in the Super-G and in 2016 in the downhill. Jakowischina has also started in deaf sports since 2016 .

At the Universiade in Almaty she won the gold medal in the Super-G at the end of January 2017. In March of the same year she took part in the second ski and snowboard world championship for the deaf in Innerkrems . With three gold medals in downhill, super-G and combined as well as two silver medals in giant slalom and slalom, she became the most successful World Cup athlete.
