Kamchatka Oblast
The Kamchatka Oblast ( Russian Камчатская область / Kamtschatskaja oblast ) was an administrative region ( oblast ) in Russia until June 30, 2007 . On October 23, 2005, following a referendum, it was decided to merge the Kamchatka Oblast with the Korjak Autonomous Okrug to form a new subject called the Kamchatka Region . This was established on July 1, 2007.
The Kamchatka Oblast occupied the southern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula , which is traversed by the Sredinny ridge . The area also includes the commanders' islands . The territory of the former oblast is extremely sparsely populated, and two thirds of the population live in the former oblast and current regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky . The Russians make up the vast majority, alongside indigenous Siberian peoples (such as Koryaks and Itelmens ).
The first Russian explorers reached the region in the 17th century, and in 1740 Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky was founded.
The most important industries include shipbuilding, fishing and the timber industry. Mining produces coal and gold, among other things. Tourism is becoming more and more important, especially in the volcano and geyser region, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site .
Kamchatka Oblast was established in 1932 as part of the Russian SFSR . It was under the Far Eastern Krai until 1938 and the Khabarovsk Krai until 1956 . Then it existed until 2007 as an independent oblast.
