Wulkanny ( Russian Вулканный ) is an urban-type settlement in the Kamchatka Region ( Russia ) with 1608 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The settlement is located about 20 km as the crow flies west of the regional administrative center of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky , a few kilometers from the right bank of the Avacha River, just above its confluence with the Avacha Bay of the Pacific Ocean .
Wulkanny belongs to the Jelisowo Rajon and is about 10 km south of the Jelisowo administrative center.
history
The place was founded as a military settlement in 1955 as part of the establishment of the Soviet Union's Strategic Missile Forces and was initially named Mirny (Russian for 'peaceful' ). From 1969 the settlement was given the code name Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky-35 . With the new legal regulation of the status of "closed cities" after the dissolution of the Soviet Union , it received this (SATO) in 1992, and in 1994 that of an urban-type settlement under the current name, derived from Russian вулкан for "volcano" , i.e. for example "volcano- Settlement". In 1999 the SATO status was revoked.

Economy and Infrastructure
The place consists mainly of prefabricated buildings and is a residential area for members of the Russian armed forces and their families. S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems are stationed near the settlement .
Wulkanny is located on the regional road R 475 from Yelizovo (where also the airport Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky - the most important of the peninsula - is located), according Termalny with turn-off to the submarine base Vilyuchinsk . South of Wulkanny branches off a newer direct connection to Petropavlovsk, which crosses the Avacha and has considerably shortened the connection between the regional capital and the west side of Avacha Bay.
