Martin Barker

Martin Barker (* 1946 ) is a British film scholar and cultural scientist . As a professor emeritus at Aberystwyth University in Wales, he supervises doctoral students in the Department of Theater Film & Television Studies . Before moving to Aberystwyth in 2001, Barker spent 29 years at the University of the West of England in Bristol , where he received his PhD in 1993 . He then worked for two years as a reader at the University of Sussex .

In the early 1980s, Barker coined the term new racism for the subtle xenophobia that developed as a result of Margaret Thatcher's policies . As a film scholar, he dealt critically with Lord of the Rings .
