Martin Cahill
Martin Cahill (born May 23, 1949 in Dublin , † August 18, 1994 in Ranelagh , Dublin) was an Irish gangster.
Cahill was one of twelve children and was sentenced to two years in prison for burglary at the age of 16. He led several gangs - first those burglaries valued at over £ 60 million , and later kidnappings. Cahill did not drink, do no drugs or play - this and the meticulous planning of his crimes earned him the nickname "General". Cahill was shot dead on August 18, 1994, allegedly by the IRA .
His life was the template for the British-Irish film production The General (portrayed by Brendan Gleeson ) and A Quite Ordinary Thief - Ordinary Decent Criminal with Kevin Spacey . There is also a book about him called The General .
