Martin Goodman (historian)

Martin Goodman (born August 1, 1953 ) is a British historian and Judaist.

Life

Martin Goodman studied Classical Languages ​​and History at Trinity College , Oxford . He received his doctorate in 1980 with the dissertation State and Society in Roman Galilee, AD 132-212 . Goodman specialized in the history of the Jews in the Roman Empire. He also received his Doctor of Letters (DLitt) doctorate in 2010.

From 1976 he was a lecturer in ancient history at the University of Birmingham and in 1986 he was a fellow at Wolfson College , Oxford. In 1996 he was appointed Professor of Jewish Studies at Oxford University. From 2014 to 2018, Goodman was Chairman of the Oxford Center for Hebrew and Jewish Studies.

Goodman was editor of the Journal of Roman Studies and the Journal of Jewish Studies . He is a member of the British Association for Jewish Studies and its chairman for a period.

Goodman was elected a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA) in 1996 . Since 2010 he has been an honorary fellow at Trinity College, Oxford.
