Martin Hermann (born May 28, 1949 in Weimar ) is a German mathematician .

Life

After receiving his diploma in mathematics in 1972 from the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and his doctorate in numerical mathematics in 1978 at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU Jena) with Walter Wallisch on shooting procedures , Hermann completed his habilitation in 1984 at the FSU Jena with a Work on bifurcation phenomena in two-point boundary value problems. In 1985 he was offered a professorship for numerical mathematics at the FSU Jena. Immediately after reunification , he was able to take up a visiting professorship for numerical mathematics at the University of Dortmund in 1990 . Since 1992 he has been a university professor for numerical mathematics at the Institute for Applied Mathematics at FSU Jena.

Martin Hermann has been the curator of the Collegium Europaeum Jenense at the Friedrich-Schiller-University since 2003 as well as the 1st chairman of the support association of the CEJ. In addition to his professional activities, he volunteers in various organizations and associations.

Hermann's main areas of activity and research are numerical mathematics and scientific computing . The focus of his research is the numerical analysis of nonlinear parameter-dependent differential equation problems . He is one of the founders of the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (1999), in which scientists from different faculties of the FSU Jena work together in the fields of applied mathematics and computer science. Since 2003 he has been leading a cooperation project with the Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Kiev) and the National Aviation University (Kiev), which investigates the movement of liquids in containers (sloshing). In 2012, Hermann founded a German-Iranian research project on the analytical and numerical treatment of non-linear common differential equations, in the context of which two monographs have so far been created. His books Numerical Mathematics (now in the third edition, 2011) and Numerics of Ordinary Differential Equations. Initial and boundary value problems (2004) belong to the standard books on numerical mathematics in German-speaking countries.
