Martin J. "Marty" Chávez (born March 2, 1952 in Albuquerque , New Mexico ) is an American politician . He was Mayor of Albuquerque from 1993 to 1997 and from 2001 to 2009.

Chavez studied at the University of New Mexico , where he got his bachelor's degree . He received his Juris Doctor from Georgetown University in Washington . From 1989 to 1993 he was a Senator in the New Mexico Senate . Then Chavez held the office of Mayor of Albuquerque for the first time from 1993 to 1997. As mayor, he reduced the crime rate and fought for the preservation of Kirtland Air Force Base . After the end of his term he ran as a Democratic candidate in the gubernatorial election in 1998 , but lost to his Republican rival Gary E. Johnson by 10%. 2001 Chavez was again Mayor of Albuquerque, where he defeated his successor Jim Baca ; he was confirmed in office in 2005.

In 2009 Chavez ran for a fourth term; with Richard Romero, however, there was yet another Democratic candidate. As a result, both divided their party's potential voters among themselves: Chavez got 35 percent, Romero 21 percent. The Republican Richard J. Berry won 44 percent of the vote and succeeded Chavez as mayor.

Since March 2010, Chávez has been Managing Director of ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability USA , a non-profit organization in which several US cities have come together to raise awareness of the problem of global warming .
