Martin Kalb

Martin Kalb (born November 26, 1906 in Biziker , † November 18, 1979 in Berlin ) was a German communist and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Martin Kalb became a member of the KPD in 1929 . From May 1937 to February 1939 he fought in the ranks of the XI. International Brigade for the Spanish Republic .

After fleeing to France in February 1939, he was interned in the Argelès-sur-Mer and Gurs camps. He later joined the Resistance and fought in the Maquis Freischar Free Germany .

From January 1944 he fought under the war name Martin Blank as a lieutenant and company commander in the maquis group Bir Hakeim . From autumn 1944 to spring 1945 he was one of the 35 German fighters of the Resistance ( CALPO ) who were trained by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and the US Army for parachuting behind the German front.

Kalb returned to Germany in June 1945. He later worked in the apparatus of the Central Committee of the SED in Berlin. He died there on November 18, 1979.
