Martin Levey
Martin Levey (born May 18, 1913 in Philadelphia , † 1970 ) was an American chemical historian .
Life
Levey graduated from Temple University with a bachelor's degree in 1934 and then mathematics, chemistry and languages from the University of Pennsylvania (without a degree). He then worked as a chemist in industry and in the merchant navy. In 1943 he was back in Philadelphia as an industrial chemist and from 1949 studied at Dropsie College (mainly old oriental languages and Arabic), where he received his doctorate in history of science under Solomon Gandz in 1952 . He was then an instructor in chemistry at Penn State University and taught mathematics and history of mathematics at Temple University from 1955. In 1959 he was with a grant from the National Science Foundation at the Institute for Advanced Study , then researched at the Medical School of Yale University and from 1965 at Rockefeller University . In 1966 he became professor of the history of science at the State University of New York in Albany (New York) . There he worked with Jack Bulloff, who had given up his position as chief chemist of the Batelle Memorial Institute to research technological trends there. In 1970 Levey died after an operation.
He dealt with chemistry and pharmacy in ancient Mesopotamia and the Islamic Middle Ages.
In 1965 he received the Dexter Award and in 1968 the Edward Kremers Award from the American Institute for the History of Pharmacy.
