Martin Rikli , also Martin Albert Rikli (born September 23, 1868 in Basel , † January 25, 1951 in Zurich ), was a Swiss botanist . His specialty was plant geography . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Rikli ". Martin Albert Rikli was the father of the Swiss chemist and documentary filmmaker Martin Rikli .

life and work

After training as a primary school teacher (1889), Rikli studied natural sciences from 1889 to 1892 with a major in botany at the Universities of Basel with Edwin Klebs , in Berlin with Simon Schwendener and Adolf Engler and in Zurich. In 1895 he earned his doctorate at the University of Basel with the work "Contributions to the comparative anatomy of the Cyperaceae with special consideration of the inner parenchymal sheath".

From 1893 to 1905 he taught natural history subjects and geography at the teachers' seminar in Zurich-Unterstrass. In 1896 he became a curator at the Botanical Museum of the ETH Zurich, an office which he held until 1930. In 1900 he completed his habilitation in plant geography at the ETH Zurich. In 1909 he was appointed adjunct professor with lectureships for food chemists, candidate teachers, foresters and other biology-related subjects. In addition to his teaching activities, Rikli's scientific merits were also recognized.

Rikli was President of the Botanical Society Zurich for almost 15 years; from 1914 to 1916 he chaired the Zurich Natural Research Society; from 1916 to 1940 he represented this society in the commission of the central library. By founding and promoting the adult education centers in the city and canton of Zurich, he worked intensively for the education of the bourgeoisie. From 1922 to 1926 he directed the adult education center in Zurich.

Since 1906 Rikli has carried out numerous study trips and excursions to the Mediterranean countries, but also, for example, to Greenland and the Caucasus for botanists, zoologists, geologists, but also for interested citizens. A scientific result of these excursions is the three-volume work The Plant Dress of the Mediterranean Countries . In botany, Rikli mainly dealt with systematic and plant-geographical issues. On his 82nd birthday, he was appointed a corresponding member of the German Botanical Society due to his scientific merits .

Honors

Is named after the plant genus Rikli Rikliella J.Raynal from the family of Cyperaceae (Cyperaceae).
