Martin Schwind

Martin Schwind (born October 29, 1906 in Hohburg ; died 1991 ) was a grammar school teacher and honorary professor. a. dealt with Japan as a natural and cultural landscape and published about it.

life and work

Martin Schwind wrote his dissertation under Heinrich Schmitthenner . He then taught at the German School in Tokyo from the mid-1930s. He traveled through Japan and dealt with the ice age, cultural, economic development, emigration and colonization of Japan. His habilitation thesis, which he submitted to the German Danzig University in 1942, dealt with the colonization of the southern part of Sakhalin , which belonged to Japan from 1905 to 1945. Back in Germany after the Second World War, he published a study on the collapse and reconstruction of Japan while he was running a high school, the Humboldt School in Hanover. In 1967 he became honorary professor at the University of Bochum at the suggestion of Peter Schöller .

On the basis of his experience, supplemented by various trips to the Far East, he published his three-volume life's work "The Japanese Island Empire". However, only volumes 1 and 2 have been published.
