Martin Slivka

Martin Slivka (born November 1, 1929 in Spišský Štiavnik , Okres Poprad , † September 23, 2002 in Bratislava ) was a Slovak filmmaker , ethnologist and film educator.

Life

In 1955 he attended the Prague Film Academy, specializing in documentary film, and in 1963 studied at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague , ethnography and folklore. Slivka worked as a dramaturge and director from 1955 and became a director in the short film studio in Bratislava from 1967. From 1977 he was teaching at the Art Academy in Bratislava.

Martin Slivka concentrated on ethnographic topics from his homeland and the documentation of folk customs, festivals and folk theater. One of his most important works is dedicated to the Slovak folk theater (Slovenské ľudové divadlo). The filmmaker also wrote teaching and documentary volumes on his films. Martin made a total of 140 films.

The film Odchádza človek (A man walks) has been included in the cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO . The film documents a funeral in the Bulgarian mountains. The Bulgarian government protested against this film, which did not conform to communist ideology. The 13-part documentary cycle Deti vetra 1.-13. (Children of the Wind) was written from 1989 to 1991. It describes the cultural characteristics of the Roma in various European countries. The cycle was v. a. discussed controversially in Roma circles and labeled as racist.

In 2007 Martin Šulík made a documentary about Martin Slivka, which impressively depicts his life and work.
