Martin Steffan

Martin Steffan (born November 30, 1876 , † after 1953) was a German fencer and participant in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm . He initially fought in Mannheim, later at the Darmstadt fencing club . In Darmstadt he worked for many years as chairman of the association, between 1914 and 1940 Steffan took over the office of treasurer at the German Fencing Association .

successes

Between 1901 and 1925, Steffan took part several times at the Gauverband festivals of the Gauverband Mittelrheinischer Fechtklubs . In 1901 he won the fixed-scale foil competition. In 1903 he was second with the foil in loose measure, at that time already as a member of the Darmstadt FC. In 1911 he won the Gauverbandfest again with the foil and came second with the saber. In 1924 he finished ninth at the German championships in saber fencing.

In 1912 Steffan fought in saber singles at the Olympic Games in Stockholm. However, he was eliminated in the first round.

Activity as a sports official

Steffan was chairman of the Darmstadt Fencing Club for many years and in 1914 became treasurer of the German Fencing Association founded in 1911. He remained in this office until 1940. After the allies lifted the ban on sport fencing after the Second World War, Steffan was the age-president when the German Fencing Association was re-established. In 1953 he resigned from the chairmanship of the Darmstadt Fencing Club and was succeeded by Heinrich Hahn .
