Martin Stegner (born November 29, 1967 in Nuremberg ) is a German violist who specializes in classical music and jazz .

Live and act

Martin Stegner began to learn the violin at the age of eight, initially with his father, who was a violist with the Nuremberg Philharmonic . Further lessons with teachers in Nuremberg and Munich followed. During this time he began to deal intensively with chamber music.

In 1989 Stegner began studying the violin at the Mannheim University of Music with Roman Nodel . He later decided to switch to the viola and received a scholarship from the Herbert von Karajan Academy from the Berlin Philharmonic . After three years as principal violist of the German Symphony Orchestra , he moved to the Berlin Philharmonic. He gives concerts as a soloist and chamber musician in Europe and Japan and has taught for the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and the Orquesta Juvenil Centroamericana and has given courses at Yale University and the Hanns Eisler Music Academy . Since 1996 he has been playing with the pianist Tomoko Takahashi and is committed to expanding the viola literature.

The fact that Martin Stegner is one of the unusual classical musicians can be seen in his interest in jazz. He toured Europe with German gypsy musicians, played at jazz festivals, recorded several jazz CDs and played with Herbie Mann and Dianne Reeves . He founded the Berlin Philharmonic Jazz Group in 1999 and founded the Ensemble Bolero Berlin in 2008 , where he dedicates himself to South American music with soloists from the Berlin Philharmonic. In the concert series Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic he worked several times with Nils Landgren .

In 2010 he began to work with the German-Iranian singer Cymin Samawatie.
