"Big Papa" Joe Bawelino (* 1946 in Munich ) is a German guitarist of gypsy jazz .

Live and act

Bawelino comes from the tradition of Sinti guitar playing, which was popularized by Django Reinhardt . He is also significantly influenced by Joe Pass , Wes Montgomery and George Benson . Reinhardt's biographers consider him an “unbeatable agile” guitarist, “whose playing, in our opinion, is probably the most successful swinging synthesis from Django and Charlie Christian's school.” Bawelino has more than 40 years of stage experience; he played in the ensembles of Alfred Lora , Wedeli Köhler and Romeo Franz . His trio, which can also be heard with Zipflo Reinhardt and Biréli Lagrène , included Traubeli Weiss and Peter Bockius . He also performed with Häns'che Weiss and Raphaël Faÿs . Tom Lord records six recordings of Bawelino between 1993 and 2000.
