Wedeli Köhler (born April 11, 1949 in Munich ; † August 16, 2011 ) was a German musician of gypsy jazz ( violin , formerly also guitar ).

Live and act

Köhler's grandfather was an imperial court musician in Vienna. His parents, who both played the violin, taught him the violin; he also learned the guitar. He appeared in public at the age of nine. In 1973 he was a violinist in Mike Reinhardt's sextet, with whom he also recorded. He founded his own group Hot Club Da Sinti with the guitarist Schmeling Lehmann and the bassist Jani Lehmann as a quartet in the style of the Quintette du Hot Club de France . Tchavolo Schmitt took the place of solo guitarist Danny Weiss in 1979 ; In 1985 the ensemble disbanded. In the now founded Wedeli Köhler Quartet with the pianist Unge Schmitt, he played violin and guitar alternately and initially approached modern jazz . The group included musicians such as Dorado Schmitt , Ziroli Winterstein and then his son Sascha Köhler. In recent years he has carried out projects with Jan Jankeje . In the spring of 2011 he and his son recorded a CD, which he did not live to see released that same year: Hommage a Django .
