Dorado Schmitt

Dorado Schmitt (born May 29, 1957 in Saint-Avold ) is a musician (solo guitar, violin and vocals) of the Swing Manouche . He renewed this genre with Raphaël Faÿs and Biréli Lagrène .

Live and act

Schmitt, cousin of Tchavolo Schmitt , started playing guitar at the age of seven. In 1978 he founded his Dorado Trio with bassist Gino Reinhardt and rhythm guitarist Hono Winterstein . In 1983 he recorded his first album, Hommage a la romenes , which Dieter Massion produced. The second LP Notre histoire was at the top of the sold jazz albums in Germany for a few weeks in 1986. Together with Philip Catherine and Oscar Peterson he performed at numerous European jazz festivals. He then played for Wedeli Köhler . After a serious car accident in 1988, he was not able to resume work with his trio until 1990. In 2001 and the following years he celebrated success in New York's Birdland , where he a. a. appeared with his son Samson Schmitt (DVD 2004 with James Carter ). His play is documented in Tony Gatlif's film Latcho Drom .

His piece Bossa Dorado developed into the jazz standard. In 2001 he was awarded the Django Award .
