Martin Urban (publicist)

Martin Urban (born September 22, 1936 in Berlin ) is a German physicist, science journalist and non-fiction author .

Life

Martin Urban comes from a Protestant family of theologians.

After graduating from high school and studying physics, chemistry and mathematics at the Free University of Berlin , Urban worked as a graduate physicist in the field of plasma physics. In 1965 he joined the editorial team of the Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) . There he founded the science department in 1968, which he continued to expand and manage until his retirement at the end of April 2002. During this time, the science section of the SZ developed into the most widely read representative of its kind.

Among other things, Urban was awarded the Theodor Wolff Prize 1972/1973 for outstanding achievements in the field of science journalism.

Since his retirement, Urban has devoted himself to theological, philosophical and psychological topics as a non-fiction author while still working for the SZ . His book Why Man Believes , published in 2005, received 2nd place in the “Science Book of the Year” competition in the “Igniter” category in Bild der Wissenschaft .

Martin Urban is the father of the Munich psychotherapist and non-fiction author Adrian Urban and the Glasgow architecture historian and university professor Florian Urban .
