In addition, it contains and evaluates 675 treatment concepts. It first appeared in 1883 under the title Martindale: The Extra Pharmacopoeia . Martindale contains information on drugs in clinical use worldwide, as well as selected investigational and veterinary drugs, herbal and complementary medical preparations, as well as pharmaceutical excipients , vitamins and dietary supplements , vaccines , radiopharmaceuticals , contrast media and diagnostics , medical gases, narcotic and recreational drugs, toxins, disinfectants and pesticides .

International usefulness

Martindale contains drugs and medicinal products of clinical interest throughout the world. It provides a useful source of information for patients traveling from abroad to identify their existing medication. It can show the other brand names under which a drug is available in other countries. Alternatively, the substance class can be determined so that a pharmacist or doctor is able to determine which alternative medicinal substance can be used. Monographs contain Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), Anatomical-Therapeutic-Chemical Classification System (ATC), and the FDA (UNII) code to direct readers to other information systems.

arrangement

Martindale is divided into two main parts, followed by three broad indices :

Monographs - Drugs and Additives

It lists 5,930 monographs, which are arranged in 49 chapters. They are based on clinical use with the appropriate evaluation of therapies. The monographs describe the nomenclature , properties and effects of the substance. A chapter on ancillary drugs and other substances includes 1,095 monographs on new drugs that are not otherwise classified, herbs and drugs that are no longer used clinically but are still of interest. Monographs on some toxins are also included.
