The Martineum is a Protestant community and educational center for deacons based in Witten .

history

The Martineum was founded in 1907 as the “Brüderseminar Witten” with the aim of training men to look after the young people in the cities of the Ruhr area . After moving to the Orthopedic Institution in Volmarstein (today: Evangelical Foundation Volmarstein ) in 1920 , this remains the home of the deacon school for over 50 years. In 1972 the Martineum moved back to Witten, now in the premises of the mother house at the Protestant hospital . In 1977 women were also consecrated into the deacon office for the first time. Since 1987 the Martineum is no longer called the Brotherhood, but "Martineumsgemeinschaft".

education

The course takes place at the Evangelical University in Bochum in cooperation with the Martineum. People are trained to work with children and young people, for senior work or adult and family education in the field of Protestant churches and their works in the degree programs of social work.

Community

For 300 deacons, the Martineum is not only a former training center, but also a service community and organizer of further education and training. The Martineum has developed new forms of further training in the field of coaching in social professions and in church event management .

organization

The Martineum is a registered association. In addition to the general assembly and the board of directors, the two standing committees Education and Community are particularly responsible for content and organization. The association belongs to the Diakonisches Werk of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia and is a member of VEDD, the association of Protestant deacon communities in Germany.
