Martinskirche (Darmstadt)

The Martinskirche is a Protestant church in Darmstadt .

history

Martinskirche was built in 1883–85 based on a design by the Scandinavian architect Aage von Kauffmann . It was named after Martin von Tours and Martin Luther .

The construction of the Martinskirche was financed by a foundation of the Darmstadt Germanist and writer Maximilian Rieger . The historical design by Kauffmann took up elements from many different epochs of architecture and was therefore rated as overloaded.

At the time of its construction, the Martinskirche and the parsonage, which was built at the same time, were on the north-eastern edge of the former development. The Riegerplatz , named in 1907 after the founder of the church, was not built until years later due to the ongoing development.

Martinskirche was badly damaged in an air raid in September 1944.

In 1950/51, the church was rebuilt in a simplified form by the architect Otti Reinheimer according to plans by Karl Gruber . Their concept included a contrasting effect of the simple nave , which had been most damaged, compared to the better preserved ornate architecture of the choir . Instead of the original graceful tower, it has now been built in a more compact form with a larger volume. The church tower is now 32 m high.

In 1985 and 1998, the church was renovated both inside and out, taking into account the neo-Gothic Aage design.

Others

The Michaelisgemeinde, which had existed since 1935, formerly Martinsgemeinde West, was also spatially separated from the United Martinsgemeinde in 1958 by a new church by the Frankfurt architect Werner W. Neumann in Liebfrauenstrasse.
