The Martinstor in Cochem or Mäuschesportz is next to the Enderttor and the Balduinstor one of the three still existing city gates of the district town of Cochem .

history

The Martinstor was built in 1352 by Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg , who was also Archbishop of Trier . The name Mäuschesportz, which is popularly used for the city gate, refers to its use at the time as a toll gate or customs gate. A customs chain (reel) was laid between the Reichsburg and the opposite bank of the Moselle . This allowed ships to be stopped in order to force the payment of customs duties.

The smaller tower of the Martinstore was converted into an ice cellar by Louis Jacques Ravené , who later owned the city gate.

Surroundings of the gate

There is a serpentine path on the outside of the gate. This was created by Ravené over the steep slope to the Reichsburg.

A saint's house "To the painful mother" from 1710 is on the road leading through the gate, a few meters in front of the gate.
