Life

Maru was born in 2007. Its owner began to document the kitten's growing up with photos and videos on his blog . In 2008 a video was released showing the cat jumping into a box. The video went viral and made the hangover famous overnight.

The videos that are uploaded to Maru's official video channel are usually a series of several individual clips that are between three and seven minutes long. They show Maru doing various activities. The titles are Japanese and English. Maru's owner is rarely seen, except in a few grooming videos showing her trimming her nails or brushing her ears. Videos with Maru achieved an average of 800,000 views at weddings. He is considered the best known and most popular cat on the internet, especially in Japan. In the western world, Grumpy Cat competes for this title. Nevertheless, there is also a report about him there. So took Entertainment Weekly him along with keyboard cat and Nora in its list of known cat videos on. The New York Times also reported on the hangover.

In 2013 Maru got a playmate named Hana, who has since been featured in some videos.

On March 24, 2017, the Guinness Book of Records named the cat “most watched animal on YouTube”. The exact number of calls on September 22, 2016 was 325,704,506.

A book and DVD called Maru Desu (“I am Maru”) were released in Japan in 2009 . Another DVD followed in 2010 and another book in 2011.
