Josef Scharbert

Josef Scharbert (born June 16, 1919 in Grosse (Sudetenland), † April 21, 1998 in Munich ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian , Old Testament scholar and university professor. From 1969 to 1984 he taught as a full professor of Old Testament exegesis at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Life

Born as the son of Oskar Scharbert and Maria Scharbert (née Kammer), Josef Scharbert studied theology at the seminary in Olomouc from 1938 and later switched to the Archbishop's Philosophical-Theological College in Weidenau. In 1939 he was called up for military service as a medic. In 1943 he returned from Russia because of injuries, was taken prisoner of war in Russia in 1945 and fled to western occupation zones. In 1946 he resumed his studies in Passau, where he was ordained a priest in 1948. He then worked from 1948 to 1951 as a cooperator in Schönberg / Bavarian Forest , Thurmannsbang and Passau-Ilzstadt . This was followed in 1951 by a doctorate in Bonn with Friedrich Nötscher , which he completed in 1953 . He studied for another year at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome , where he obtained a licentiate in biblical studies in 1954. In 1955 and 1956 he worked as a teacher of Hebrew in Tübingen , followed by his habilitation in the subject of Old Testament exegesis by the University of Bonn in 1957, where he subsequently worked as a private lecturer , in 1958 as a substitute professor and from 1960 as an associate professor.

From 1964 Scharbert was a full professor at the Philosophical-Theological University of Freising . In 1968 he moved to the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich as a full professor of Old Testament exegesis . In 1984 he retired . His students include a. Werner Berg and Edith Heindl.
