Nora (cat)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nora (* 2003 / 2004 ) is a cat, gained worldwide fame through video recordings on which she plays the piano. The video sequences are among the most successful YouTube videos. After international press coverage of the cat, CDs, DVDs, two books, three wall calendars and other merchandise such as T-shirts, posters and coffee mugs by Nora were released.

Life

Nora belongs to the piano teacher Betsy Alexander and the photographer Burnell Yow. She lives in Philadelphia with five other cats in a house. The two found the cat in a New Jersey animal shelter in 2004 . It is named after the painter Leonora Carrington . Nora's owners first noticed her piano attempts when she was around one and a half years old and was alone in the room with the piano, playing the keys. She usually plays when Alexander is teaching students on another piano. She is in the same rhythm as well as in the same pitch, usually within an octave with the students. The London Times described her music in 2007 as "between Philip Glass and Free Jazz ".

After Alexander and Yow uploaded recordings with Nora on the YouTube channel, around 20 million people viewed them between the first posting in 2007 and August 2009. In 2009, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals awarded Nora the annual Cat of the Year award for showing the general public that shelter animals are often the best companions.

Appearances

The Lithuanian composer and conductor Mindaugas Piečaitis composed a four-minute concert for her. For the so-called CATcerto she performed via video transmission together with the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra in the sold-out chamber music hall in the Lithuanian city of Klaipėda . In the Badische Zeitung , however, the composer was not yet sure whether Nora could also perform live with orchestral accompaniment.

Nora played live on the Today Show on NBC and has appeared on VH1 , Conan O'Brien , Tyra Banks , Ellen DeGeneres and Martha Stewart . The Austin American-Statesman proclaimed her the most important celebrity cat the web spawned as a result of the Lolcats , and National Public Radio used her as an example of how Youtube can make anyone famous.
