She worked in various capacities at the University of Liberia , was Chair of the Teachers College and Vice-President for Academic Affairs. From 1978 to 1984 Brown-Sherman was the first female university president in Africa and, after the military coup of Samuel K. Doe, fought courageously against the attacks by the putschists on the university. Her impeachment took place on August 22, 1984; This was preceded by an ultimatum by the military junta to hand over students and lecturers - including the dean of social sciences Amos Sawyer - which Brown-Sherman bravely refused to do. After her release she left Liberia immediately and emigrated to the USA. In the United States she supported the Liberian exiles.
