Mary Elizabeth Bayer

Mary Elizabeth Bayer ( Mary Liz Bayer , born February 10, 1925 in Alberta , † September 7, 2005 ) was a Canadian cultural politician and writer.

Bayer grew up in Manitoba. She was there u. a. Director of the Volunteer Bureau and Manitoba Centennial Corporation , Founding Director of Manitoba Arts Council and Heritage Winnipeg , Founding Member of the Assembly of Arts Administrators, and first female Assistant Deputy Minister of the Provincial Government.

At the national level, Bayer served as President of Heritage Canada and a member of the National Executive of the Girl Guides of Canada , Charlottetown's Confederation Center for the Arts and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO . Even after her retirement in 1980 she was politically active a. a. as Chair of the Greater Victoria Library Board , Founding Member of the Greater Victoria Arts Commission , Board Member of the Provincial Capital Commission and Chair of the British Columbia Heritage Society .

For her activities she was awarded the Centennial Medal of the Manitoba Historical Society in 1970 and an honorary doctorate from the University of Manitoba in 1975 . In 1994 she became a member of the Order of Canada and in 2000 an honorary citizen of Victoria. In 2004 she received the Woman of Distinction Award for Lifetime Achievement .

In addition to her political and voluntary activities, Bayer was also active as a poet and writer. She wrote the libretto for Murray Adaskin's opera Grant, Warden of the Plains .
