Mary Gardiner is an Australian programmer and web activist . Her commitment to women in network culture and in the use of open systems and software such as Linux has received special attention .

Gardiner founded in January 2011 and heads the Ada Initiative named after Ada Lovelace , a non-profit organization that aims to increase the participation of women in the open source area and the corresponding technology and cultural production.

Until September 2011 she was on the board of directors of Linux Australia.

Gardiner co-founded the Australian women and IT network AussieChix, which later became known as Oceania Women of Open Tech. In the meantime, she was also a project manager at LinuxChix and is committed to opposing social guidelines and norms that disrupt the success of women in the open source area.

Gardiner has therefore also advocated freedom from harassment at conferences .

In 2011 she won the Rusty Wrench Award for her services to Linux in Australia.

At Wikimania 2012 she gave a keynote address. According to this, the proportion of women in the German-language Wikipedia is 8% and in the English-language Wikipedia 14%. The Wikimedia Foundation aims to increase this percentage to 25%.
