They were discovered by participants in the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911–1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . The island is named after one of the sled dogs on the research trip. Its namesake, in turn, is Mary of Teck (1867–1953), wife of the English King George V.
