The Cape Denison is a rocky cape at the head of Commonwealth Bay on the East Antarctic Georg V. Coast . The Mackellar Islands are three kilometers to the north .
It was discovered in 1912 during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson , who set up the expedition's base camp here . Mawson named the Cape after the Australian businessman Hugh Denison (1865-1940), a financier of the research trip .
Cape Denison with its historical buildings is today protected by the Antarctic Treaty . It has been declared an ASPA-162 Specially Protected Area and Mawson's Huts has been designated an HSM-77 Historic Site . Protection as a specially managed area ASMA-3 expired in 2014 when a new management plan for ASPA-162 came into force. Because of the seabirds that breed here , especially the Adelie penguins , a 102 hectare area at Cape Denison is designated as an Important Bird Area (AQ157) by BirdLife International .
