The wooden church of Rogoz ( Biserica de lemn Sf. Arhangheli ) is one of the wooden churches protected as UNESCO World Heritage in the Maramureş in the village of Rogoz in the Romanian municipality of Târgu Lăpuş ( Laposch ). It is dedicated to the Holy Archangels .

history

The church was built in Suciu de Sus , a few kilometers to the east, in 1663 , two years after a Tatar invasion that destroyed the previous church. The church survived another Tatar invasion in 1717. Building inscriptions provide information about both events. In 1834 the apse was extended and a gallery was added.

In 1883 the church was transferred to Rogoz. It has been part of the world cultural heritage since 1999 and is protected as a monument in Romania under the number MM-II-mA-04618.

Plant and equipment

The church consists of wooden beams that are joined together without metal elements. It stands on a stone foundation. The wooden shingle roof protrudes far and thus protects the walls from rain and snow. The west tower is also made entirely of wood. The tower and outer walls are decorated with carvings, a coiled rope and rosettes. There are only two windows in the nave and a small round window behind the altar.

The church has a polygonal pronaos with access from the south side, a rectangular naos and an apse that is closed on seven sides. It is richly painted with frescoes by the painters Radu Munteanu and Nicolae Man, as indicated by the inscription on the altar. The individual scenes are described in Cyrillic script. In 1834 the frescoes were partially renewed.
