The Mackellar Islands are a group of around 30 islands and cliffs off the George V coast in the Australian Antarctic Territory . They are located 2.5 km north of Cape Denison in the eastern part of Commonwealth Bay .
They were discovered by participants in the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911–1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . Mawson named it after Campbell Duncan Mackellar (1859-1925), a financier of the expedition, who was previously involved in financing the Nimrod Expedition (1907-1909) of the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton .
