Mary Leslie, 9th Countess of Ross

Mary Leslie (first name also Margaret , the last name is sometimes given with Lesley ) (* before 1366, † around 1435), 9th Countess of Ross , was a Scottish noblewoman .

Life

Her father was Walter Leslie and her mother was Euphemia, 6th Countess of Ross .

Few details are known of her life. Around 1390 she married Donald MacDonald, Lord of the Isles . After the death of her brother Alexander in 1402 and the poor health of her niece Euphemia , she was considered the alleged heiress of the title and lands of the "Earl of Ross" . In 1411 Donald MacDonald then tried (and by force) on behalf of his wife to assume this inheritance early. With the defeat of his troops on July 24, 1411 in the Battle of Harlaw against an army under the leadership of Alexander Stewart , Mary had to regard this attempt as a failure.

In 1415 Euphemia renounced title and ownership in favor of her grandfather Robert Stewart . After Euphemia and then his two sons John and Robert had again installed as heirs, the property was administered by a royal governor. Mary (and iure uxoris also her husband) was entitled to the title of Earl of Ross de iure ; but with reference to the campaign of 1411, the title remained unused in the possession of the Stewart family.

Her marriage to Donald had a son; Alexander , as well as a daughter; Mariota. Alexander was confirmed after the death of his father and after the death of John Stewart, but while his mother was still alive, in 1424 by James I as "Earl of Ross" and "Lord of the Isles".
