Alexander Leslie, 7th Earl of Ross
Alexander Leslie, 7th Earl of Ross (also Lesley , * before 1366; † May 8, 1402 in Dingwall ) was a Scottish nobleman .
Life
Alexander was the only son of the Scottish knight Walter Leslie and his wife Euphemia Ross . His mother was heir to the North Scottish Ross and other estates, but did not have the title Countess of Ross , which she was actually entitled to. She died before 1399, after which he inherited her property and now also took on the title of Earl of Ross . Leslie renounced the feudal barony of Fythkill on February 20, 1395 in favor of his cousin George Leslie of Rothes . On November 8, 1398, he signed over the Woodfield lands as security for a loan of 200 Merksto settle accrued debts with the Crown.
Alexander Leslie died unexpectedly in Dingwall in 1402. He was buried in Fearn Abbey , the traditional burial place of the Ross family.
Marriage and inheritance
Leslie married Isabel Stewart in 1398, daughter of Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany and his wife Margaret Graham, Countess of Menteith . With her he had a daughter:
After his death, the young Euphemia became his heir. The Duke of Albany claimed her guardianship prior to 1405. In 1415 he was able to convince his ward to leave Earldom Ross to his younger son John Stewart . Should John die, Ross would inherit his brothers and eventually Albany himself. This surrender led to a conflict with Donald, Lord of the Isles , who claimed on behalf of his wife Mary Leslie , the sister of Alexander Leslie Ross. The Earldom Ross eventually fell to Alexander , the eldest son of Mary Leslie and Donald, Lord of the Isles.
