The Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art is an art museum in Evanston , Illinois. It is located on the campus of Northwestern University there .

history

The Chicago steel manager Leigh Block (1905–1987) and his wife Mary Lasker Block (1904–1981) were art collectors. In 1980 you donated a new building to Northwestern University for initially changing exhibitions in the style of German art galleries . The building was named the Mary and Leigh Block Gallery after its founders .

Collections

But soon the museum had its own art collection through acquisitions and donations and so it got its current name in 1998. Today the collection comprises more than 6,000 works, including mainly drawings, prints and photographs. The highlights of the collection are works by Albrecht Dürer , Honoré Daumier , Max Beckmann , Wassily Kandinsky , Mary Cassatt , Henri Matisse , Jasper Johns , Chuck Close and Kiki Smith .
