Maryam Majd

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maryam Majd ( Persian مریم مجد, DMG Maryam Maǧd , * 1987 ) is an Iranian sports photographer and human rights activist . She is one of the few female sports photographers in her country.

Life

As an activist, Majd campaigned for women in Iran to be allowed to watch football games in stadiums, which has so far been prohibited. Majd specialized in sports photography, but her pictures were usually censored by the official media. She worked on the popular women's magazine Zanan (German: "Women") until it was banned in 2009.

At the invitation of the former German national soccer player Petra Landers, Majd wanted to fly to the women's soccer world championship in Germany in June 2011 to accompany the players with photos and publish a book about the tournament, but never got there because the regime in Tehran had her arrested. Volker Beck , human rights spokesman for Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen , said it was obvious that “Maryam Majd was arrested for political reasons. You and your work stand for emancipation, equality, freedom of expression and freedom of the press. "

For the first time, she was allowed to travel to France for the women's soccer World Cup in 2019 . The International Association for Sports Journalists (AIPS) now lists Maryam Majd as one of the top ten photographers for sports photography in Asia and Oceania.
