Marzocco (heraldic animal)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marzocco is the name of the lion in heraldry who holds the coat of arms of Florence as a shield holder with his right paw in front of his body. The Florentine lily is depicted on the coat of arms .

The depiction goes back to a sculpture that was created by the sculptor Donatello in 1420 and is now exhibited in the Museo del Bargello in Florence. A sandstone copy is in Florence in Piazza della Signoria . 'Marzocco' was also the battle cry of the Florentines.
